What is it?
Often self-diagnosed, hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, is technically a serum glucose level of 54 mg/DL or lower. While most clients with hypoglycemic symptoms do not reach this threshold, they experience its symptoms, including hunger, anxiety, grouchy mood, tremulousness, sweating, and nausea the farther away they get from their last meal. Often a client’s symptoms are due to a rapid drop in blood sugar level, and can be more common after a meal high in simple carbohydrates (termed reactive hypoglycemia). Hypoglycemia can also occur in a diabetic client, as a result of blood sugar that falls too far below where it should be.
- The incidence of hypoglycemia or reactive hypoglycemia in the general population is unknown
- May occur in diabetics
- Often occurs after meals high in simple carbohydrates in sensitive clients
- May be caused by certain drugs
- Indicates that dietary control of blood sugar may need to be addressed
How do we treat it?
Blood sugar control and stabilization is dependent upon several organ systems, including the liver, pancreas, and adrenal glands. Assessment may require lab testing, which we may recommend. Depending upon the results, we will address the various organ systems involved so that your body is better able to maintain blood sugar homeostasis. During this process, we work with you to find the ideal diet and exercise plan to make those “blood sugar blues” a thing of the past.
